About Us

Civitan's Mission Statement
The worldwide mission of Civitan International is to build good citizenship by providing a volunteer organization of clubs dedicated to serving individual and community needs with an emphasis on helping people with developmental disabilities.

Civitan's Creed
I AM CIVITAN: as old as life, as young as the rainbow, as endless as time.
MY HANDS do the work of the world and reach out in service to others.
MY EARS hear the cry of children and the call throughout the world for peace, guidance, progress and unity.
MY EYES search for others to join in the fellowship and service of Civitan.
MY MOUTH utters the call to daily duty and speaks prayers in every tongue.
MY MIND teaches me respect for law and the flag of my country.
MY HEART beats for every friend, bleeds for every injury to humanity and throbs with joy at every triumph of truth.
MY SOUL knows no fear but its own unworthiness.
MY HOPE is for a better world through Civitan.
MY MOTTO: builders of good citizenship.
MY BELIEF: do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
MY PLEDGE: to practice the Golden Rule and to build upon it a better and nobler citizenship.

Joining:  Discover the Best in Yourself and Others

Civitans seek to be more informed about their communities. Through learning more about community events and issues, Civitans are able to focus their efforts on causes most deserving of their attention. At Club meetings Civitans hear from community, media, business and government leaders who provide informative and entertaining programs on the issues that effect Civitans and their families the most.
Civitans are dedicated to improving their communities through community service. On the international level Civitan's major focus is toward helping people with mental retardation and disabilities. However, on the local level, we are involved in a variety of fund-raising and service projects.
Civitans are active, involved members of their communities, leading the way to a better and brighter future for the young people of the world. And as a growing and productive community service organization, Civitan realizes the importance of offering its members opportunities for personal and professional development, as well as the opportunity to meet new friends and develop long-lasting friendships with people who share similar interests.

Civitan Facts

Civitan, a worldwide community service organization, was founded in 1917 by a small group of businessmen who began meeting weekly to discuss how they could improve their community. Civitan International was established three years later in 1920

The name "Civitan" is taken from the Latin word Civitans which means citizenship. Civitan's motto is Builders of Good Citizenship! Today there are approximately 55,000 men, women and young people and nearly 1800 Civitan and Junior Civitan clubs worldwide. In 1974 Civitan became the first previously all male service organization to welcome women as equal members

Since the 1930's Civitan International's major focus has been toward helping people with mental and physical disabilities; however, local clubs are involved in a variety of community service projects, based on the needs of their communities. Civitan's most recognized fund raising project is the Civitan Candy Box
